The Great Bible of 1540, authorized by King Henry VIII and largely prepared under the supervision of Miles Coverdale, was the first officially sanctioned English Bible intended for public reading in churches.
The original bible from 1540 is printed in a grand folio format with elaborate woodcut title pages, it drew extensively from the earlier Matthew and Coverdale Bibles while revising the text to conform to royal and ecclesiastical expectations. Its imposing size, clear typography, and wide circulation made it the foundational English Bible of the Tudor Reformation and a defining monument of early English printing.
