Sibyllarum Vaticinia Facsimile - Rare Reproduction

(The Prophecies of the Sibyls)
Impressum Venetiis per Bernardinum Benalium, s.d. [ca.1520]

It’s rare and bibliographically important.

Few copies survive. Because the book lacks a printed date ( sine dato ), scholars use typographic and stylistic evidence to estimate its publication around 1520. Collectors, libraries, and historians of early printing prize it as a representative artifact of prophetic Renaissance literature.

Many cataloged Benali copies are described with 24 to 40 leaves (48–80 pages) depending on how complete they are.

About Sibyllarum Vaticinia :

This work, broadly known as “The Sibylline Oracles” or “The Prophecies of the Sibyls,” is a collection of medieval or Renaissance texts attributing prophetic utterances to legendary female seers (Sibyls) of antiquity. In the Christian Middle Ages and Renaissance, Sibylline prophecies were reinterpreted as foretelling the coming of Christ and various apocalyptic events — making them immensely popular for devotional and prophetic literature.

These books typically:
- Contain short oracular texts attributed to each Sibyl (there were 10–12 Sibyls in common medieval tradition).
- Are accompanied by woodcut illustrations of each Sibyl, often in elaborate Renaissance dress.
- Include interpretations connecting the Sibyls’ sayings to Biblical events or Church teachings.

About Benali’s Edition

  • The Venetian edition by Bernardino Benali , circa 1520, is one of several early 16th-century printings of the Vaticinia Sibyllarum .
  • These editions are important for their beautiful woodcut depictions of the Sibyls , reflecting the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance art in Venetian book illustration.
  • Surviving copies of Benali’s Sibyllarum Vaticinia are rare and often held in major research libraries or special collections.

Historical Significance

  • The Sibyls’ prophecies were integral to Christian iconography and thought during the Renaissance, appearing in everything from Botticelli’s paintings to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling.
  • Printed versions like Benali’s helped standardize and disseminate these texts and images to a broader European audience, influencing both popular piety and elite art.
