The Bamberg Psalter
Staatsbibliothek Bamberg (Bamberg, Germany)
Ca. 1220–1230
Handbound facsimile of the Bamberg Psalter, one of the most celebrated illuminated manuscripts of the Late Romanesque period. This work stands among the most important devotional books of the Middle Ages and has been described as “the summit of all Bamberg art.”
The original manuscript is renowned for its remarkable unity of form and decoration. Gilded miniatures, luminous colour, and an exceptional binding—set beneath translucent horn plates with silver mountings—combine to create a work of extraordinary presence. This facsimile does not reproduce the original materials such as precious metalwork or horn elements.
Created in the early 13th century in the artistic sphere of Regensburg and later preserved in the treasury of Bamberg Cathedral, the Psalter represents the high point of Romanesque book art. It reflects a refined devotional culture emerging alongside the great architectural projects of the period, including Bamberg Cathedral.
This is a limited facsimile edition, only 199 copies made by hand, presenting the manuscript in a format suitable for study, collecting, or display.
