The Poggiali Codex, originating from 14th-century Florence, is considered to be the oldest illustrated version of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. Its artful arrangement features the primary text written in two columns down the middle of the pages, accompanied by commentaries in glosses along the margins. These glosses, known as the Palatine Glosses, include both Italian and Latin annotations. The manuscript contains commentaries by Jacopo di Dante (Dante’s son), as well as texts from Jacopo della Lana and Graziolo Bambaglioli, such as the Ottimo Commento, Anonimo Latino, Anonimo Lombardo, and Guido de Pisa’s Declaratio.

The Palat. 313 Manuscript of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy is not only historically significant but also visually captivating. It features 37 miniatures, with 32 of them dedicated to the inferno. These miniatures are directly integrated into the text, vividly portraying events. Crafted by various artists, including a master associated with Bernardo Daddi’s circle and another from Pacino di Bonaguida’s circle (1280–1340), these miniatures enhance the manuscript. Colorful initials further adorn this remarkable work, which dates back to the second quarter of the 14th century in Florence and is recognized as the oldest illustrated copy of the Divine Comedy. Please note that "Gold ink" is not used in our facsimiles to reproduce illuminated manuscripts.
