Carmina Burana is a remarkable medieval manuscript that intertwines literature and music. Discovered by Johann Christoph von Aretin in Benediktbeuern Abbey during the secularization period, this unique document originated in the 13th century and continued to evolve until the mid-14th century. Within its pages lie 318 texts—lyrics, songs, and dramas—penned by influential poets of their era. Notably, the manuscript features captivating miniatures alongside the text. The renowned Beurer Songs, also known as Carmina Burana, add to its exceptional allure.
The renowned Beurer Songs, more commonly recognized as Carmina Burana in Latin, hold a significant place in human cultural heritage. These songs, famously set to music by Carl Orff in the 1930s, were lost until the early 19th century. The unique manuscript resurfaced during secularization when Johann Christoph von Aretin discovered it in the library of Benediktbeuern Abbey in 18031. Interestingly, the Carmina Burana likely originated from Carinthia, Styria, or modern South Tirol, rather than the Upper-Bavarian Benediktbeuern Abbey where it was found.
Notably, the circular depiction of the wheel of fortune is particularly famous.
Carmina Burana is preserved in a single manuscript, along with an additional fragment. Both are currently housed in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) under the shelf marks Clm 4660 and Clm 4660a in Munich.
